GREENHOUSE GIRL
(Mackay)
I want to share my life with you, but your love for Greenpeace is
Tearing us apart, our love's become an endangered species
We could save the planet together, I could be a thoughtful lover
I don't mind sharing you with Sir David Attenborough
The hole in my heart's bigger than the hole in the ozone layer
I gave you those black eyes to make you look more like a panda bear
And when you smashed me in the face at least you recycled my glasses
I never wafted the bed covers to save on greenhouse gases
You say that I am environmentally unstable
Even though I've watched all of those nature films on cable
I stalked you like a lion hunts gazelles on the savannah
I peeled the layers of your heart like a monkey peels a banana
Your Doctor Marten in my face was a subtle hint
You wanted to impress upon me your carbon footprint
And when you set my pants on fire, I didn't think it strange
I knew it was your metaphor for climate change
I remember when we only had to save the whale or ban the bomb
Do we really have to save Pete Doherty or listen to Pete Tong?
I tried to be at one with nature, I went and hugged some trees
But all I ended up with was Dutch Elm Disease
Greenhouse girl
We can save the world
Maybe not today
What about a week next Thursday?
We could make placards together
If it is nice weather
